TITLE

A Resolution of the Mayor and City Council of the City of Maricopa, Arizona, declaring and adopting the results of the Primary Election held on August 2, 2022. Discussion and Action.

AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION

A.R.S. §16-642 requires that the governing body holding an election meet and canvass the election not less than six days nor more than twenty days following the election.

Per A.R.S. 9-821.01, the majority of votes cast is calculated by dividing the total number of votes cast in each candidate’s race by the number of seats to be filled, dividing that number in half, and rounding to the next highest whole number. The attached exhibit from the Pinal County Elections Department reflects that the actual votes cast for all of the candidates for the office of City Council was 17,860. This amount includes 104 votes cast for all write-ins. Since the City Clerk's Office did not have any qualified write-in candidates, the 104 votes have to be excluded from the calculation which results in actual votes cast for all candidates for the office of City Council to be 17,756. Based on this total, the majority of votes needed to be declared elected at the primary is 2959. There were three (3) Council seats available. The total number of active registered voters was 36,639.

The following candidates did receive a majority of the total number of valid votes cast for the office sought and are hereby issued certificates of election: Vincent Manfredi, Rich Vitiello, and Henry Wade. These candidates will officially be sworn-in on December 6, 2022. Since the three (3) open council seats have been filled, the City will not be holding a General Election in November.
