TITLE

The Mayor and City Council shall discuss and possibly take action on a request by Chief Leffler for a new firefighter in the Fire Department in FY2019/2020. Discussion and Action.

AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION

The Maricopa Fire Department is requesting approval to add one additional firefighter position in FY 2019/2020. Through reorganization, the fire department will eliminate an Assistant Chief position in order to add a Firefighter position for use in the field. The Fire Department can support funding for this position (for an amount not to exceed $63, 662) and a variety of other adjustments through vacancy savings based on the salary difference between an Assistant Chief and a recruit Firefighter.  Adding this position will bring the Fire Department to full staffing, enhancing firefighter safety and community response. Once fully trained, there will be a gradual reduction in overtime. We will also be able to allow two vacation slots per shift, which in the end should reduce sick-time usage. This additional head count does not have a budgetary impact on the current approved budget.

This requisition, if approved, will meet preferred staffing levels.  We percieve no request for additional personnel until such time as we add a fifth station.  Total vacancy savings - $121,500, total personnel costs needed - $106,256.

This item will be presented by City Manager, Ricky Horst.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends adding one full-time Firefighter to the Fire Department.  Personnel funds through the FY 2019/2020 approved budget will be allocated through overtime savings. August 1st is our target date, as the Mesa Fire Academy beings on August 5.
