TITLE

AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION
Water is needed to maintain the landscaping, turf irrigation and water levels of the lake at Copper Sky Recreation Complex. The complex has more than ten acres of turf and is therefore subject to the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) water allotment standards.

On November 5, 2013 Council approved the purchase of 1,500 acre-feet of long term water storage credits in the amount of $487,500 from the Gila River Water Storage, LLC. The long-term storage credits that were purchased were for surface water which is not counted against the City in the water allotment provided by ADWR. They help staff maintain the best quality turf while not exceeding the City's given allotment. The Copper Sky Recreation Complex uses an estimated 425 acre-feet of water per year.

These long-term water storage credits are stored in the Maricopa-Stanfield Irrigation and Drainage District Groundwater Savings Facility. Water is conveyed and wheeled by the Maricopa-Stanfield Irrigation and Drainage District thru a separate agreement that was also approved by Council on November 5, 2013.
