AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION
The City of Maricopa recently completed the Maricopa Housing Needs Assessment and Housing Plan, 2017 - 2027. Based on the comprehensive analysis and robust community engagement, the Needs Assessment indicates significant demand for more housing diversity so that all current and future Maricopa residents can find a quality home affordable to them. In particular, the city needs smaller homes for one- and two-person households, and lower cost apartments and homes for workers, students, and seniors on fixed incomes.

Per the City Council approved FY16 -17 budget and related Work Plan 2016-17, the Housing Needs Assessment was on the list of work the Development Services Department was directed to implement. The Study recommended the city to start the Housing Plan as the next step for more in-depth analysis and implementation of the housing plan.

Following the Housing Needs Assessment completion and approval by the City Council in July 2017 by approving Contract 17-34 with the First Amendment to the contract with Atria Planning, Inc. to provide consulting services of completing a Housing Plan as recommended from the Housing Needs Assessment Study.

To accomplish this, the City commenced the Housing Plan planning process to develop much-needed housing in a manner that supports walkability, new shops and restaurants, and a “downtown” area, so that new apartments, townhomes, and condominiums will be integrated into a vibrant and attractive destination for all residents to enjoy. The City, through a design charrette, completed the preliminary concept plan for this new development within the City Center site. Future work will continue these efforts leading to new real estate development guided by the City and its residents.
