AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION

As the demands for data increase the demands on our internal network also increase.  We are adding more video surveillance cameras to our network every year.  The network demands for the Internet of Things, or Smart City initiatives add to that demand.  Our data network must grow to keep pace.  The wifi access points at City Hall and Copper Sky are of the wireless "n" technology and cannot deliver the bandwidth that our newer wireless devices (cell phones, tablets, and laptops) with wireless "a/c" are capable of receiving.  Meanwhile, our core switch can only deliver 1 Gbps (gigbit per second) throughput.  Due to it's older architecture, adding 10 Gpbs capability to increase throughput would be prohibitively expensive.  Last, but not least, the internal switches and core switch are approaching "end of sale" at Cisco.  Once they hit their end of sale date, Cisco will no longer provide security patches and firmware updates for these models.  Therefore, our plan is to upgrade this equipment to current hardware versions and to keep our equipment well within the "end of sale" dates to ensure we continue to receive security patches and firmware updates.
