TITLE

An Ordinance of the Mayor and City Council of the City of Maricopa, Arizona, amending Section 2-62 of the City Code to provide the Council with authority to call special elections for initiative and referendum measures and providing for severability and declaring this Ordinance to be an emergency measure that is operative immediately as provided by law.  Discussion and Action.

AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION

Currently, the City Code does not provide Council with the authority to call a special election for initiative and referendum matters.  This means that any initiative or referendum matter can only be placed on a ballot at a City primary or general election, which may be more than a year from the filing of the initiative or referendum matter.  Staff is recommeding a change to the City Code to allow the Council to authorize a special election for an initiative or referendum matter in order to have the ability to make the process more timely and for the efficient administration of City services and elections.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Mayor and Council adopt this Ordinance.
