The Mayor and City Council shall hear public comment regarding the use of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), State Special Projects (SSP) funds with a maximum funding amount of $300,000. SSP is a competitive grant submitted to the Arizona Department of Housing and is awarded based on eligibility and funding availability.
AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION
On March 20, 2012, the Mayor and City Council heard public comment regarding the use of Community Development Block Grant, State Special Projects as a competitive funding program. At this public hearing the following projects were discussed:
1. Paving Lexington and Roosevelt Avenue in the Heritage District
2. Paving a quarter mile of Whisker Road to Cowpath Road in the Seven Ranches District
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds are utilized to address housing and community development needs. The CDBG program is a flexible program that provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. The State Special Projects (SSP) Grant is competitive and is a component of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program; it is meant to only address needs of low/moderate citizens. All other CDBG requirements apply. Crucial to the CDBG Program is the involvement of local citizens and elected officials. In fact, to participate in the program and receive funds, a community must be able to document citizens and officials have been given the opportunity to discuss community needs and suggest possible CDBG/SSP projects. Ultimately, the decision on which SSP program will be submitted rests with the elected officials in a community.
