TITLE
A Resolution of the Mayor and City Council of the City of Maricopa, Arizona, declaring and adopting the results of the Primary Election held on July 30, 2024. Discussion and Action.

AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION
A.R.S. §16-642 requires that the governing body holding an election meet and canvass the election not less than six days nor more than twenty days following the election.

In order to be elected at the Primary, candidates needed to receive the majority of votes cast. Per A.R.S. 9-821.01, the majority of votes cast is calculated by dividing the total number of votes cast in each candidate’s race by the number of seats to be filled, dividing that number in half, and rounding to the next highest whole number. The attached exhibit from the Pinal County Elections Department reflects that the actual votes cast for all of the candidates for the office of Council Member was 20,883. This amount includes 86 votes cast for all write-ins. Since the city did not have any qualified write-in candidates, the 86 votes have to be excluded from the calculation which results in actual votes cast for all candidates for the office of Council Member to be 20,797. Based on this total, the majority of votes needed to be declared elected at the primary is 3,466.

Votes cast for all of the candidates for Mayor was 8,826. This amount includes 45 votes cast for write-in. Since we did not have any qualified write-in candidates, the 45 votes have to be excluded from the calculation which results in actual votes cast for Mayor to be 8,781. Based on this total, the majority of votes needed to be declared elected at the primary is 4,390.

The following candidates did receive a majority of the total number of valid votes cast for the office sought and are hereby issued certificates of election: Nancy Smith for the office of Mayor and Eric Goettl, Amber Liermann and Bob Marsh for the office of Council Member. These candidates be sworn-in on December 3, 2024.
