TITLE
An Ordinance of the Mayor and City Council of the City of Maricopa, amending Section 2-52 of the Maricopa City Code based on possible adoption of a recommendation to modify the City's resign-to-run requirements as presented by the Council Task Force on Boards, Committees, and Commissions. Discussion and Action.

AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION
On June 19, 2012 Maricopa City Council approved the creation of a Council Task Force to review the role of the City of Maricopa's board, committees and commissions and to recommend changes including possible revisions to the City Council's policy on Boards, Committees and Commissions.  Mayor Price appointed himself, Councilwoman Gusse, and Councilmember Kimball to serve on the Boards, Commission, and Committees Task Force (BCC Task Force).

The BCC Task Force met on the evening of July 5, 2012 and again on July 19. All members of the various committees were invited (Transportation, Heritage District, Planning & Zoning, Board of Adjustments, and Parks, Recreation, and Libraries). Average attendance for each meeting was more than a dozen, with all groups represented.

The BCC Task Force came to a consensus that the Maricopa City Code requiring the resignation of any member of a board, committee, or commission if they intend to run for office was overly harsh. The BCC Task Force recommended that our City Code should reflect Arizona law which states that a candidate for office must resign to run unless they are in the last year of their term.

Approval of this ordinance will mirror State requirements in that members of our City boards, committees and commissions be allowed to complete their term if they are within the last year of their appointed term.
