TITLE

The Mayor and City Council shall discuss and possibly take action to accept a grant from the Arizona Department of Public Safety through the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant program. The grant is for a total of $77,372 and covers one full time position. Discussion and Action.

AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION

The Maricopa Police Department sought and received approval on 6/21/16 as part of GRA 16-17 to apply for up to $100,000 in VOCA funding to cover Sarah Vonderheide’s position and continue providing victim assistance programs within the City.

On October 14, 2016, MPD was informed of their grant award. MPD scored a 435 out of 485 on their application. MPD was awarded $77,372. The funds will cover Sarah Vonderheide’s position 100%. MPD has a local match of $19,343 that will be covered by the ACJC grant awarded and already accepted by the City.

Due to the timing of the award and the length of time we may have before MPD and the City receives the official contract, MPD wanted to bring this to you sooner than later to ensure we can continue providing these services with the understanding that any funds that are utilized to cover the victim advocacy position (S. Vonderheide) will be recouped once the grant document is officially signed and executed. All necessary documentation is being kept by the Grants Coordinator and Finance.

The item will be presented by Steve Stahl, Police Chief.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the Mayor and City Council accept the grant and authorize Chief Stahl, City Manager Rose, and the Grants Coordinator to sign and prepare all grant related documents.
