TITLE
The Mayor and City Council shall discuss and possibly ratify a letter by Mayor Price supporting the Central Arizona Regional Transit (CART) system's nomination for the Arizona Transit Association Outstanding Rural/Small Urban Transit System 2014 Award. Discussion and Action.
AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION
The Central Arizona Regional Transit (CART) system is a cooperative effort by the City of Coolidge, Pinal County, the City of Casa Grande and Central Arizona Coolidge (CAC) to provide regional transit services in Pinal County. The CART system, operating in its present configuration since 2011, average 25,000 trips per year, with CAC students representing 45-50 percent of riders.
Central Arizona Regional Transit system has been nominated for an award for Outstanding Rural/Small Urban Transit System by the Arizona Transit Association. The Maricopa City Council Strategic Plan (2013) lists the objective of pursuing an "
effective mass transit system to serve the City" by reaching "
beyond our existing political and jurisdictional boundaries to create regional transit partnerships
" which includes potential linkage with City of Maricopa transit services. Given this in combination with Council's stated goals to promote regional partnerships, the Mayor was honored to draft and sign a letter of support for the nomination of CART for this important award.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends Council ratify this letter in support of CARTS nomination for Outstanding Rural/Small Urban Transit System 2014 award.
