TITLE

An Ordinance of the Mayor and City Council of the City of Maricopa, Arizona, adopting "Chapter 10.30: Truck Routes" by reference and approving the addition of Chapter 10.30: Truck Routes to the Maricopa City Code and providing for severability and the effective date thereof.  Discussion and Action.

AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION

The City of Maricopa has several regional transportation corridors that bring oversized and overweight trucks through the City’s streets. Currently the City does not have a mechanism to regulate which roadways these trucks are allowed to travel on. As a result, these trucks travel on roadways that are not well-suited for the oversized and overweight trucks. Particularly, the trucks will often use Porter Road to access Smith-Enke Road.

The oversized/overweight trucks place additional wear and tear on the City’s streets and are a disruption to the neighborhoods and traveling public. Often, these trucks will occupy two lanes of traffic and will impede the flow of traffic. Additionally, there are times when the trucking company’s contractors may need to lift certain traffic signals due to excessive height. The purpose of adding Chapter 10.30: Truck Routes, is to provide adequate and appropriate corridors for the oversized and overweight trucks to travel through the City.

The Arizona Revised Statute, ARS. §28-1103, allows the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to issue permits for the oversized/overweight vehicles traveling throughout the State. Establishing specified truck routes within the City of Maricopa allows ADOT to direct these trucks to remain on the municipality’s approved roadways.

This item will be presented by Keith Brown, Director Office of Engineering and CIP Development.
