TITLE
The Mayor and City Council shall discuss and take action to approve an Intergovernmental Agreement with Maricopa Unified School District for School Resource Officers. Maricopa Unified School District will contribute $1,334,252.64 over three years for four School Resource Officers. Discussion and Action.
AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION
Maricopa Unified School District has received grant funding through the Arizona Department of Education "School Safety Grant" in the amount of $111,020.05 per year for each full-time School Safety Officer for 10 months. This grant will replace the previous COPS Hiring Program grant that ended on June 30, 2023 and IGA 19-11 and IGA 20-05.
The grant is effective July 1, 2023- June 30, 2026. The total costs to the City for two months of salary and benefits is estimated to be $22,204 annually per School Resource Officer. The School Resource Officer position is budgeted in GL 10022123-51100.
This grant benefits the City of Maricopa through safe and durable communities and builds trust within the community and among the youth. The SRO's will be on campus to assist with enforcement when necessary but more so to act as a role model, provide law enforcement related education, develop relationships and make referrals to victim services to follow up with families and connect them with services and programming.

Staff recommends entering into an Intergovernmental Agreement with Maricopa Unified School District for School Resource Officers.
