TITLE
The Mayor and City Council shall discuss and possibly take action to extend the Shop Local Program through the remainder of Fiscal Year 2012-2013. Discussion and Action.

AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION
Staff is proposing to extend the program through the remainder of FY12 -13. Currently, the program is scheduled to terminate October 31, 2012. Funding for the program remains available within the advertising budget.

City Council authorized the Shop Local Program March 6, 2012 in an effort to encourage residents to shop in the local community, with locally-owned businesses, whenever possible. Shopping local is critical because $73 of every $100 spent at a locally-owned business remains in the community; as opposed to only $43 in a non-locally-owned business. In addition, shopping within the local community keeps tax dollars collected in the area, benefitting schools, roads, public services, and amenities for residents. The purpose of a "Shop Local" promotional program and marketing effort is to:
1) raise awareness of the economic impact of local shopping;
2) encourage and incent local residents to shop local whenever possible; and
3) educate residents on the many businesses and services already in Maricopa.

Program Details:
· The City of Maricopa, to encourage residents to shop local, will offer a monthly prize drawing.
· For every $250 in original receipts submitted for non-grocery spending in the local community, names will be entered into a monthly drawing for a chance to win a $100 gift card good at participating businesses.
· For every $500 in original receipts submitted for non-grocery spending in the local community, shoppers will automatically receive a $10 gift card good at participating businesses (limit 20 shoppers per month).
· All entries receive a recyclable City of Maricopa shopping bag (requires pickup at City Hall).
· The drawings will continue through the remainder of FY12-13.
· Businesses must sign up to participate in the promotion progra...
