TITLE
A Resolution of the Mayor and City Council of the City of Maricopa, Arizona, Renaming the Willow Room at the Maricopa Library & Cultural Center to the Willow Arts Studio and authorizing the City Manager to continue to name other rooms within city facilities as necessary. Discussion and Action.
AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION
The Maricopa City Code § 2.05.070 establishes the procedure for the Naming of City facilities. Traditionally, ‘facilities’ was understood to include the naming of buildings that the City constructs or has previously constructed. In 2025, the City Council approved the Rental Fee Policy, and although it did not expressly amend the City Code, it provided a definition of “facility” to include rooms within buildings.
Traditionally, buildings have been ‘named’ after the function they provide and are often ‘approved’ as part of the Capital Improvement Plan. Examples of these could include buildings such as the “Police Administration Building” or “City Hall”. Where exceptions have existed, or specific names are desired, like for the “Copper Sky Recreation Complex”, the City Council has passed a subsequent resolution (in that case, Resolution 13-09 provided a unique name for the multigenerational and aquatic center and regional park).
The City recently received a request to rename a room at the Library & Cultural Center. Because of the recently-approved Rental Fee Policy and this request to rename the Willow Room, Council is being asked to approve the renaming of the room and authorize the City Manager to continue to name other rooms within city facilities as necessary.
Renaming the “Willow Room” to the “Willow Arts Studio” at the Library & Cultural Center will not have a further impact on the room. This space will still be available for general use, and the fee to rent the space will remain the same as approved as part of the fee schedule. The intent of the name change is to simply designate a collaborative space that could strengthen the arts community in Maricopa. The name change would be reflected on signage and advertising materials in the future
